ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Understanding the influence of perfectionism among senior nursing students is imperative for addressing strategies to reduce career distress and enhance job search behavior. The purpose of this study was to identify perfectionism types among senior nursing students in South Korea. Differences in career distress and enhanced job search behavior for each perfectionism type were compared. @*Methods@#A cross-sectional, descriptive design was employed. A total of 211 nursing students completed surveys for Perfectionism, Job Search Behavior, and Career Distress. Cluster analysis and post-hoc tests were conducted. @*Results@#A total of 80.1% were classified into the perfectionism group, including adaptive (49.8%) and maladaptive (30.3%). Maladaptive groups showed the highest discrepancy between standards and their perceived achievements as well as career distress. Job search behavior was the highest in the adaptive perfectionism group but the lowest in the non-perfectionism group. @*Conclusion@#Nursing educators should consider career coaching customized by each perfectionism type to improve job search behavior among nursing students.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the lavender fragrance on sleep and depression in women college students. METHOD: Forty-two women college students who complained of insomnia were studied during a four-week protocol(control treatment week, 60% lavender fragrance treatment week, washout week, 100% lavender fragrance treatment week). All subjects were in the department of nursing in "K" college and the study was a single blind repeated measurements experiment. For the duration of the study, weekly evaluations of sleep, patterns of sleep disturbance, severity of insomnia scale, self satisfaction with sleep, and severity of depression were performed. RESULT: Among sleep variables, length of time taken to fall asleep, severity of insomnia, and self satisfaction with sleep were improved for the 60%(p=.000, p=.000, p=.000) and 100%(p=.000, p=.000, p=.000) week while the severity of depression was improved only for the 100%(p=.002)week. CONCLUSION: According to the study results, it can be concluded that the lavender fragrance had a beneficial effect on insomnia and depression in women college students. Repeated studies are needed to confirm effective proportions of lavender oil and carrier oil for insomnia and depression.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The use of methotrexate for the treatment of cervical pregnancy is now common practice. Our study was performed to determine the risk factors when the primary methotrexate treatment of cervical pregnancy was failed. METHODS: From January 1985 to December 1999, we studied 32 women with cervical pregnancies who were treated with methotrexate intramuscularly according to a repeated intramuscular injections protocol. For evaluation of the efficacy of therapy, pretreatment serum concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin, the size of the gestational mass, fetal cardiac activity, and the presence of fluid in the peritoneal cavity were measured. This findings were analyzed and compared by means of the chi-square test, Fisher exact test, and student's t-test between the success and failure. RESULTS: There was no relation between the women's age, parity, the size of the conceptus, or the presence of fluid in the peritoneal cavity and the efficacy of treatment. A cervical pregnancy that presented with a serum human chorionic gonadotropin concentration of >or= 10,000mIU/ml, fetal cardiac activity was considered to be associated with a higher failure rate of primary methotrexate treatment. CONCLUSION: Among cervical pregnancies, a high serum human chorionic gonadotropin concentration and fetal cardiac activity were the important factors associated with failure of treatment with methotrexate.

ABSTRACT

Interrupted aortic arch is a extreme type of coarctation of aorta and mostly associated with other cardiac anomalies. Unless there were no proper management, about 90% of babies would be dead in their neonatal period. A 28-year-old nulliparous woman was refered to our hospital for fetal echocardiography at 23 weeks' gestation with an abnormal prenatal ultrasonographic findings. We found interrupted aortic arch(type A), which was located in distal portion of the left subclavian artery, and ventricular septal defect. After 5 months follow up, the baby was vaginally delivered at 40 weeks' gestation. This baby was delivered at 40 weeks' gestation of a male infant with APGAR scores of 8 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. Neonatal echocardiography and electron beam tomography revealed interrupted aortic arch(type A), ventricular septal defect(subaortic type), patent ductus arteriosus, and atrial septal defect(ostium secondum defect). At the 10th day of birth, the infant was performed the operation of end to end anastomosis of desending aorta, patch repair of atrial septal defect, ligation of patent ductus arteriosus, and direct closure of patent foramen ovale.
